Sept 18: Last Hike

We were up bright and early for our last hike 😢. After a very nice breakfast, we walked out the door to hike up two small mountains. The weather was sunny for once, so Renate took some photos. Just look at the sandstone formations!

We got a little lost every once in a while, but because we're mostly on the Malerweg (Painter's Path), it wasn't a big deal. Furthermore, the weather was exceptional! What's that strange light in the sky?

We were especially excited to summit the first mountain (I believe it was the Gohrichstein) with the great views. Here's James, who usually doesn't use hiking poles, showing his joy with Renate's poles!

We had lunch near a man-made cave that was the result of sandstone mining. The cave is open for hiking, and a whole group of students (and later several of us) did so. After lunch, it was off to Pabststein. The hike was great fun and by now we were used to the stairs and a few ladders -- what a shame it's the last hiking day!

After the hike, we stopped in Gohrisch for a sweet treat. Renate had the Kirsch-Walnusskuchen (cherry-walnut cake) which was excellent! Then we walked back to the hotel just in time for the Rosenheim Cops on TV (a cult show that Renate also watches at home sometimes).

After that, we got some fresh towels at the reception and had a sauna. The sauna was quite new, beautifully tiled, and included a Finnish Sauna, Bio-sauna, and Steam, with a great cold water shower. We enjoyed this special treat, and left the sauna refreshed for supper. (It remained a mystery why none of our fellow travelers joined us.)

Sept 6-10: The Adventure Begins!

For weeks, no, for months, we had prepared for our adventure in Germany! The trip description was clear: This was not going to be a walk in ...
